Medical Compression Therapy

Medical compression therapy is the use of graduated compression stockings that act to assist muscle (most commonly calf muscle) to gently squeeze stretched vein walls.  This helps vein valves to function better and improve blood flow. The greatest pressure applied by the stockings is at the ankle and decreases as it goes up the leg, thereby fighting the effects of gravity and more effectively circulating blood back to the heart.

Medical compression therapy can be used to treat tired, achy legs, late day swelling, and preventatively for travel, while pregnant (to prevent varicose veins) or if you stand or sit for long periods of time.  Higher compression is used in some advanced or higher risk conditions. These should be prescribed by a physician and include both a diagnosis and level of compression required.

Measurement is key to getting an effective and comfortable stocking.  At Pedorthics London, we are able to measure and fit both Medical Compression Stockings (greater than 20mmHg) and OTC stockings.  In today’s market there are many more options available in colour and materials. We can provide choices from different suppliers and help you find a stocking that fits your lifestyle as well as your prescription.
